In the still of the night and in a room clouded by a melancholic gloom; not only the room, even my very bones and spirit were so darkened and lifeless; lying faced upward on the pallet behind the cushion in the living room and lost in an agonistic hindsight.
My reins of happiness panicked as I sought an answer for the fury in my head; "Yes! Annabel it is. The bane which strangled my cherished sanity", my inner thought roared. "I desire nothing for her but death."
For a moment it felt so real, I had a firm grip on her throat, pressed hard to the ground, as she laid there helplessly in between my tighs. And then suddenly the scene faded like a sweet nightmare. "Woe is me!" I muttered gnashingly. "What could amount to such rejection? My Physique ..... Yes!" I thought rhetorically. "Wait a minute, that can't be"
The gallery appeared so blurry and unreal, for my eyes danced moodly in burning tears, which streamed down my cheek like Nile, as I sought my way to it. Beholding the portrait resting at the extreme end of the gallery, leading to the diner, aroused a sense of ecstasy; like that of a miner who found a fragment of gold, after years of toil. I crawled over and snatched it greedily. My frail hands ran over it inquisitively and suddenly the surge of energy I felt faded. "The beholder is nothing but a Shadow of the portrait" I cried out loudly.
"Haha" I laughed grimly, "You are nothing, but a fool's gold". I warned and demonstrated with my right hands pointedly at the portrait.
I had positive lights of exploring the oil and gas sector after graduation from the University of Ilorin. This had been my life time dream, but it was cut short or should I say am now at verge of losing my career?
This was how it all started. One fateful evening Anabel arrived our house looking so shabby and unkempt. , I sat close to the pool chatting with mummy, as the gate man directed her towards us.
"Good evening ma", she greeted politely. "Good evening". Mom replied, staring directly into her eyes as though the answers she sort lies in there.
